Tragedy Strikes Young Immigrant Children

In 1920 two young croatian youths aged 10 and 6 years old were left orphaned in the USA.

John Matkovic, and his little brother Daniel were orphaned when their father Joseph Matkovich vanished without a trace from Sioux City, Iowa; and Anna Bakic-Matkovic was diagnosed with a fatal illness.

Joseph and Anna had immigrated to the USA about 1910, the year John was born in Chicago. Since that day they
lived in various parts of the Mid-West United States of America. They had lived in Chicago, Mason City Iowa,
Kansas City, and finally seemed settled in Sioux City in 1919. One day Joseph failed to come home. Shortly after that Anna was diagnosed with TB. She was sent to a hospital, and her children were taken from her loving care.

The boys never saw her or Joseph again. Anna had died in a hospital in Ottumwa Iowa in February 1923, the hope of her children ever finding her alive lost. Anna's parents were Stephen Bakic, and Julia Vuksic-Bakic. Anna had been born in Austria-Hungary (Croatia) in February 1885.

If you are able to help find family or information please contact me to solve 80 year old mystery.
What happened to Joseph, is any family still alive, is there more family?

What a sad story! I certainly hope there is somebody out there who can shed some light on this mystery.
And, as always - exact locations in Croatia where the ancestors were born, lived or died, is a great help.

Dear Dave,

Your story is very interesting.
My grandfather Mate Bakic also immigrated to USA in 1910, his brother Mark and some other Bakic's from small fishing town Novigrad (from Dalmatia, Croatia).

As I know my grandfather Mate return to Novigrad at the end of 1910 because of bad situation with his wife Marija. In 1911 my father Shime was born. His brother Mark Bakic used to live in Illinois.

In 1972 I visited USA as a student and counselor in YMCA camp, and I tried to find him, but unsuccessfully. I'll try to investigate about immigrants from Novigrad in 1910 more. Maybe, the roots from your grandmother Ana Bakic came from Novigrad, Dalmatia, Croatia.

Best regards
Kresimir Bakic

Correction - Novigrad is not in Dalmatia, but on the Istrian peninsula.

Looking for any Matkovic family tree information

Name : Zvonko Matkovic; Nicola Matkovic
Location: Croatia

My father's name is Zvonko Matkovic, and he lived in Lansing, Michigan, USA for many years. I heard rumors that he has moved back to Croatia. I believe that my grandfather's name was Nicola, though I cannot be certain. I also believe that my grandmother's name was Milenka, as I have been told that I was named after her. I have heard rumors that both of my grandparents are deceased. I know that my father has a relative (cousin perhaps) named Bruno, who lives in Lansing, Michigan, USA also.

I have little to no information on my Matkovic roots, and I am desperately searching for anything.

Does anyone know what Dr. Dulic said on December 30, 2001?
Dave

Webmistress' comment

Sure Dave, here's the translation:-

This is yet another (story) in the sea of countless tragic fates of our croatian nation.
I can only state that the family Matkovic is numerous in Backa/Subotica, where I too come from.

This is where the Franciscans brought us in the 17th century, during the widespread migration of croats, caused by turkish invasions.

If somebody is interested in the history of this branch of the croatian nation, Bunjevci, he should search within the extensive literature by dr Ante Sekulic, our renown academic.

...Matos

Posted by: Marlene Matos Mercurio on June 25, 2001

Name: Michael (Matija) Matos
Location: Croatia

My grandfather's name is listed as Michael (Matija) Matos on his death certificate. He is listed as being born in Yugoslavia or Austria/Hungary on February 19, 1886. He emigrated to the United States. His father was also Michael Matos, and his mother's maiden name was Mary Spahn. He married Luba Simonich. He also had a sister who emigrated to the United States, and a brother who emigrated to Australia. I don't know if Matija was the Croatian surname and if it was changed to Matos when he arrived in the United States, or if Matos was the Croatian surname.

I would like to know if there are any living relatives in Croatia. I believe my grandparents were from the Zagreb area. I know that my grandparents used to send packages there, but that was probably 50 years ago.
