Genealogical research in Croatia
This is not all that simple, but quite possible - here are
the basic steps to begin with:-
1. Name(s) of ancestors to be found - pay attention
to the spelling! many surnames have been modified with time, especially
outside the croatian borders
2. All available dates, eg - birth, marriage, death;
Occupation, if known, is often a big help, since many of
the old state-owned companies, as well as governmental and educational
institutions, kept their own records
3. Location - check on maps to ensure the name of
town/village has not been changed or modified
4. Get in touch with the nearest church and/or parish "Zupni
ured" (good luck!), as that is the place where old records
are kept throughout Croatia - you might even find their tel number
and address in the croatian on-line telephone
directory
5. Refer to this site periodically for possible information
posted by other visitors
