19. CLOCK TOWER has been a prominent symbol of Rijeka since the middle ages. Then the town still had its surrounding walls, main square and its own bell tower. Following an earthquake in 1750 which destroyed the old tower, Maria Theresa commissioned the erection of a new one, together with a clock which was replaced in 1873 with the timepiece used at the World Exhibition in Vienna, still functioning today.
20. CONCERT HALL
was designed by architect Giacom Zammatti and opened to the public in 1890.
21. ADRIA HOUSE built in 1897, was a former shipping agency's office. One of the most attractive buildings in Rijeka, its luxurious construction was a symbol of Rijeka's marine power at that time.
The building was designed by architect Franjo Matasiç and is decorated with sculptures depicting sailors by Sebastiano Bonomi.
22. ROYAL MARINE HOUSE
was built in 1884 to the design of architect Josip Hubert.
23. KAPUCINER CHURCH
Situated next to the central bus station, this church is a unique example of neo-medieval architecture in the region. It is dedicated to the Madonna of Lourdes. Due to the lack of funds, the construction took 25 years to complete, from 1904 to 1929; but even then it was not quite finished; the projected bell tower was never built.
24. PALACE PLOECH
This grand old mansion is to be found in the immediate vicinity of the Kapuciner church. Annibale Ploech, a rich immigrant from Australia who decided to settle in Rijeka commissioned architect Giacom Zammatti with the design and construction. On completion it was one of towns most beautiful buildings.
25. ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FOR BOYS
Designed in 1888, also by Giacom Zammatti, the school building adopts Florence's early rennaisance style. Apart from being a school, it also housed the public library and museum.
