12. THE OLD TOWN HALL on Kobler square was the centre of public life between 1532 and 1838. The square in front of the hall was the site of all public events at that time. It served as a market place, location for political gatherings and barterers; just like an oldtime stock exchange during the day, whilst in the evening it was used as a promenade. Ivan Zajc, croatian composer, lived and worked here awhile.
13. MARY'S ASCENSION CHURCH
was built in the early middle ages on the site of a roman bath house. Throughout the centuries it was extended and renovated, achieving its final appearance in 1824 with the addition of the apsis. The church has a large belfry dating back to 1377. Locally it is known as the 'leaning tower' due to its slant of 40 cm from the base to the top.
14. OLD TOWN WALL
Not far from Mary's church the remains of the old town wall may be seen.
Most of the wall was demolished in the 18th century with the permission of tsar Josip II as it was restricting the town's expansion.
15. THEATRE IVAN ZAJC
The well known architects from Vienna, Fellner and Helmer, designed this grand and elegant building in rennaisance style. With its luxurious expansion it can be compared to any middle european theatres of that era.
Construction began in 1883 and already by 1885 the first electric lights in town were used to light the theater.
16. MARKET, consisting of two almost identical pavilions, was designed by ing. Isidor Vauchnig and completed in 1881. It was built principally of steel and glass, a construction considered to be revolutionary in those days.
The facades are decorated with plastiques by the venetian sculptor Urbano Bottasso.
17. PALAZZO MODELLO, located opposite the theatre, was built parallel with it and completed at the same time, in 1885.
The building was designed by Fellner and Helmer in true viennese style, making it comparable to any of the austro-hungarian structures in their own metropolis.
The facade is an ornamental blend of baroque and high rennaisance elements. Originally a bank, it is today the seat of the city library.
18. ST NICHOLAS - ORTHODOX CHURCH was built in 1790 and financed by the small but wealthy serbian minority.
The church boasts an extensive collection of icons from the 18th century, collected mainly in Bosnia and Vojvodina.
