...Mihaljevic; Mihalovic; Buban

Posted by: Gaylene on January 12, 2000

Name 1: Grgai (Gregory) Mihaljevic
Name 2: Mihael (Mikel) Mihaljevic
Location: Fuzine

Grgai (my great grandfather) died at the age of 78 around 1932. Karlina Kombol (my great grandmother) died in 1905 at the age of 41. Her mothers maiden name: Mance. They had 4 children 3 boys and 1 girl. Oldest son died in infancy, second son died at age of 17 (any information found on these two boys would be great).

Only daughter Mary born Feb 2, 1876 in Fuzine and died July 11, 1953 in Iowa. She married John Buban born Jan 31, 1865 in Fuzine and died Dec 14, 1951 also in Iowa. They had 15 children and if anyone wants I have all the information. Two of their children are still alive (one girl and one boy).

And then there was my grandfather Filip (Philip) Peter Mihaljevic born May 1, 1883 in Fuzine and died Feb 26, 1972 in Missouri. Katarina Rupe (my grandmother) born Nov 25, 1888 in Fuzine and died Nov 13, 1942 in Missouri, her father George Rupe and her mother Jelena Stepancic.

Philip & Katarina had 11 children - 8 boys 3 girls and again if anyone wants all the information I also have. Also on Filip and Katarina's marriage certificate under the city section is Fuzine R 214 (does this mean the number of their house?) Mihael Mihaljevic my great-great grandfather born Sept 13, 1819 was married twice to Kata Cuculic and Jelena (Helen). I don't know which was first nor who the 7 children are by. The children Matya (Matthew), Stephen, Andra (Andrew), Anton (Toni), Miha (Mike), Vicko (Vincent) and Vincenco (Vicka or Cena); the last two are twins and Grgai (Gregory) my great grandfather. And Mihael's father was Andrija Mihaljevic born around 1798 who married Margarira Blazevic - they had 5 children - Mihael (Mikel), Marija, Barbara, Autun and Juraj.

How I came about this information was back in the late 60's and early 70's - my mother and sister did alot of corresponding with Zagreb and paid for research and with the papers we received I have come to the above conclusion. If there is any errors, and there very well may be, please let me know because all I want is the correct information.

Thanking you for your time in advance.

Antonia was the daughter of Ursula Mihaljevic and was born 1858 in Fuzine, Yugoslavia and was married to John Mihaljevic in Fuzine.

They had several children there and emmigrated to USA about 1890 and settled on Kangley, Illinois. Paul died there in 1904. The rest of the family moved to Roundup, Montana in about 1913.

I am especially looking for Antonia's siblings that are listed in her obituary as John who lives in Centerville Iowa and a sister Mrs. Racki of Cincinnati Iowa.

Posted by: Joey on February 21, 2003 - Mihaljevic? = Meholovitch?

Hi there.... I'm Joey Meholovitch from Shadyside, Ohio (USA) My grandmother recently passed away. My family and I went through some of her and my grandfathers photos and belongings. We have found the foreign spelling for our name "Meholovitch" as "Mihaljevic" in numerous letters from family members still within Europe. Some of the letters were postmarked Yugoslavia, Hungary, and Croatia. So I was trying the www.yahoo.com and www.google.com searching for the name. (and found your last name amongst many others)

Do you know of any family going to America? Or have any interest? Most of the letters were from 1913 - 1941. Unfortunately there all written in German???

My grandfather was Rudolph and his parents names were Ernest John and Laljie Kattarina Mihaljevic. They imigrated to New York and then on to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. (USA) Are you aware of any relatives immigrating to USA from the past? Any information or thoughts would be appreciated.

I myself am 27 years old and teach Computer Class at Union Local Middle School. I grew up with the last name Meholovitch and always thought there wasn't anyone in the world with the same last name as ours. (its kind of a unique, long, spelling for a name) So if you can add anything that would fill in the blanks it would definately be great! Thanks......... Josef J. Meholovitch

I'm searching for his sons or their children or grandchildren.

Name: Ante (Anthony, Antonio) Milas
Location: Zmijavci, Imotski

I am searching for my uncle's brood (sons or grandchildren).
My uncle Ante (Anthony, Antonio) Milas lived in Fort Pierce, Florida. He was born on 17th of August 1894. in village Zmijavci (Podbablje) near Imotski in Croatian region Dalmatia, Europe. In that time Croatia was a part of Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.

After the World War I Ante, as many others, went over the Ocean to U.S, because that was very hard time here. At that time Croatia became a part of Yugoslavia.

Ante married American girl and had two sons with her. After his first wife died, he married his second, French, wife. He had no children with his second wife. He used to write a letter or send a package with food to us in times when I was a little boy.

My cousins, if they are alive, probably have over 70 years, but I hope to meet their children or their grandchildren. My uncle died in 1955 or 1956 in Fort Pierce, Florida. He was a Catholic so I assume that he was buried in a Catholic cemetery.

Family Mimica is a frequent surname in our country.
All of them are from village Mimica 20 km from Omis towards Makarska. There are many sites on the web about Croatian and Dalmatian geography.

Family Vrsalovic (Without e) Last letter is in Croatian c with apostrophe and pronounced CH.
Family is from island of Brac (Brach), from eastern part of the island. Probably from village Selca. Island Brac is seven nautical miles away from Mimice.
Now in town of Split there is a great number of Mimica's and Vrsalovic.

Good luck
My father's first cousin was Vrsalovic in Selca /Brac

Lijep pozdrav

Webmistress' comment

Since many of visitors to these pages are not fluent in croatian, and this is rather interesting information, i will take the liberty of roughly translating Vlado's note, as follows:-

Family Mimica originates from a place called Mimica, located on the way between Omis and Makarska on the adriatic coast. Thus, the surname gave the settlement a name. Family Mimica produced a number of distinguished individuals. It descended from clan TAFRA/TAVRA, which apparently came from Hercegovina.

Twenty years ago a book was published dealing with the origins of this family. I can only add that amongst the refugees from Imotska krajina fleeing the turkish invasion at the end of the 17th century, TAFRA is mentioned. It should be clarified whether today's Mimicas are descendats of those refugees ?
That could be most likely ! Regards

A large number of Mimica's end up, at the beginning of this century, in the South of Chile, most of them coming from Mimice, Split and Omic. One of my cousin's, Sergio Mimica had studied the geneaological tree of the Mimica's from Omic and Split since 1670 up to date. Some of the inmigrants in Chile were also Vrsalovic and Ostojc.

I recognize some persons in your story. "File" was the wife of Vicko OSTOJIC-KNEZIC from village POVLJA on island BRAC. File was probably from MIMICE, the facing village on the coast on-shore. Drago and Karmela are File's son and daughter.

Drago was a judge, the president of the Court in Split. He died ten years ago. His son and daugher live in Split.

Karmela married KUZMANIC and lived in PISAK, village next to Mimice. His son and three daugters live or have attachments in Pisak.

And me in your story? My grandfather IVAN was brother of VICKO OSTOJIC-KNEZIC and Drago was my father's favorite cousin. Drago was 1 year older than my father. So, he was born in 1908. I personnally encountered File, Drago and Karmela many times when I was young.

The book also contains large amount of fotos and the family tree from the year of 1641 to our time. This family tree, I belive, contains your name, too.
The book is written in croatian language, and I doubt that it is possible to find it in the bookstore or anywhere else, but you can contact me if you are interested, so we can see what we can do about it. My father, Stjepan Mimica, has a copy of the book.
